I had recently started writing a blog series of the same name ('Girlboss') so I figured that the natural progression was to actually read the book and find out what the hype was all about.

What really is a #Girlboss anyways?

Girlboss

What it's about

'#Girlboss' by Sophia Amoruso is part autobiography and part how-to guide when it comes to starting your own business. It gives some back story into how she started off as an out of work thrifter who turned to eBay to sell her vintage finds. This evolved into a hugely successful online fashion store , Nasty Gal that is known worldwide and a Netflix TV show.

The blurb on the back gives a hint of what to expect "Filled with brazen wake up calls and behind-the-scenes stories of Nasty Gal's early days, #Girlboss proves that success doesn't come from where you went to collage; success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break."

What I like about it

Similar to "You are a Badass" I like the personal touch of this book. Those anecdotes make a nice addition and allows what she's saying to seem more realistic and achievable. I like the light-hearted and conversational tone (which I feel is becoming a trademark for me because that's how I like to write also). The notion that "Money looks better in the bank than on your feet" is also something that resonates with me, particularly as I'm delving more into minimalism.

Some parts of the book were irrelevant to me. Sure, I guess through blogging I am 'starting my own business' of sorts but I don't really need to read about hiring and firing. I was also kind of hoping that she would talk about being a Girlboss in more of a broader capacity...I don't necessarily think that you need to be a girl who is a boss in the workplace to actually be a Girlboss I think the term has now been broadened to encompass a lot more than that.

Some great quotes

- "Even if I had wanted to drop $500 on a pair of shoes, I was just too busy. #Girlboss, when your time spent making money is significantly greater than your time spend spending money, you will be amazed at how much you can save without really thinking about it." P. 107

-"The last thing the world needs is another boring person or another boring brand, so embrace the things that make you different. Alter your clothes all you want, but don't you dare alter your inner freak- she's got your back as much as I do." P. 141

-"It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things." Leonardo da Vinci P. 150
